Not For Ruby

"Three weeks ago we got word at our church that Ruby Eliason and Laura Edwards had both been killed in Cameroon. Ruby was over 80. Single all her life, a nurse; she poured her life out for one thing: To make Jesus Christ known among the sick, and the poor in the hardest and most unreached places. Laura was a widow, a medical doctor, pushing 80 years old, and serving at Ruby's side in Cameroon. The brakes give way, over a cliff they go, and they’re dead - instantly. And I asked my people: is this a tragedy? Two women in their 80’s, a whole life devoted to one idea, and twenty years after most of their American counterparts had begun to throw their lives away on trivialities in Florida and New Mexico… is this a tragedy, I asked? It is not a tragedy.
I’ll read you what a tragedy is. I’ve got a little article from readers digest. This is a tragedy. Title of the article, “Start now, retire early.” "Bob and Penny took early retirement from their jobs in the Northeast five years ago when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30 foot trawler, play softball and collect shells." THAT’S a tragedy. And there are people in this country that are spending billions of dollars to get you to buy it. And I get 40 minutes to plead with you, DON’T BUY THAT DREAM. The American Dream: a nice house, a nice car, a nice job, a nice family, a nice retirement, COLLECTING SHELLS…. as the last chapter before you stand before the Creator of universe to give an account with what you did. Here it is Lord! My shell collection! Look Lord, my shell collection! And I’ve got a good swing! And look at my boat, God…. .look at my boat. Well, not for Ruby."

This is a quote from John Piper's sermon at One Day, 2000 in Memphis. I wasn't at One Day, but I heard the sermon. Ruby became my hero after hearing it. "Not For Ruby" has become a life quote for me. Give in to the American Dream? Not For Ruby.

Dr. Magnuson is my Ethics teacher here at Southern. He started to tell a story about his Great Aunt Ruby. The more he told of the story, the more I became convinced that my hero, Ruby, was the same Ruby that he was talking about. So, I raised my hand and asked. Sure enough, it's the same Ruby.

I talked to Dr. Magnuson after class and told him that I love Ruby. Her story has given me a new perspective on life. I asked if I could sit and talk with him and his family about Ruby. I want to know more about her life, her philosophy, her theology. I want to know this hero on a personal level. Dr. Magnuson agreed to let me in on his Great Aunt Ruby's life.

I am SO EXCITED about this! A woman in her eighties who gave her entire life to the Lord and was a single missionary to the unreached people of this crazy world. Eighty years old and still going overseas!!

The American Dream has been seared into our minds. It has stolen our knowledge that true satisfaction is not found on earth. It has dangled a ploy before our eyes and we have greedily snatched up the illusion. This "dream" claims to be the treasure of life. So, was it a tragedy for a frail old woman to give her life to the Lord in missions? Was it a tragedy that she never married? Never retired on the beaches of Florida? Never experienced the American Dream?

Not For Ruby.

Nikki, I wish you would get excited about Ruby. It's too bad that you can't muster up even a hint of passion about this subject! :)

Yeah, as I walk down the street (in the hood) with a huge boombox on my shoulder.
Oh man, I'll be laughing about that for a long time!

Yes, it's true. Tonight I had a fake boombox on my shoulder (it was really heavy, too) and Laura was breakdancing. Well, not exactly, but she might as well have been!

To answer all of your questions.....

gumwrappers and sinatras are just eprops and comments....i just renamed them random things for the heck of it.

I was down the other day (and that entire week) because the depression that came into my life last spring and had been gone since summer decided to make it's return. It seems to come and go whenever it pleases. It stinks but it's one of those times I have to be still and let God fight for me (ex.14:14).

Ah...the shane and shane incident....excellent literature.

I'm doing anything fun becuase I have no money. So I am staying here and working instead. It will be ok. I'll get some things done.

There is a certain boy that I would like to have pursue me but pretty much in general it would be nice to be pursued. I'm kind of getting bored waiting for this particular guy to act.

So, there you have it. All the answers to all your questions. I love you!!!!

I agree!! I hate the American Dream. I fight buying into it. It is so easy to get caught up in the American culture of greed and individualism and want of more stuff.
Wow- to live lives of joyful sacrifice like Ruby and Laura did. Can you imagine what it was like when they met Jesus-- whom they had served wholeheartedly and sacrificially for 80 years.
I hope you learn a lot from her fam, Nikki.

Piper has an excellent book on missions called 'Let the Nations Be Glad!' If I'm not mistaken, he devotes an entire chapter to this issue. I'm not sure though. It's been a while since I read it.

Excellent post, Nikki! You know, I've had conversations with people where everyone starts daydreaming about that faraway day of not having to work anymore, cashing in their 401Ks and going on cruises, vacations, sleeping in every day, and just living as they please. I just have no desire for that kind of lifestyle.
I'm not knocking vacations, believe me, but as far as making it a lifestyle, or moving to Florida and playing golf all day -- no way. If God lets me live that long, I want to devote whatever time I have from retirement to death in His service. What a powerful example that sets for the generations you'll be leaving behind when you die!

Yeah those stories have stuck with me also, but its good to be reminded.

I actually heard them in reverse. I heard Dr. Magnusson tell the story in Ethics shortly after it happened. Then a couple of months later I was at One Day when Piper told the story, and I realized it was the same. You're right, it's worth remembering.

Ok, so my mom is now reading your blog, Nikki. Your influence extends to many generations...

When Nick told me how excited you were in Dr. Magnuson's class after realizing the Ruby he spoke of was YOUR Ruby, I was extremely inspired, to say the least. I've noticed especially since I've graduated college and I'm trying to support Nick while he's in school, I fantasize about having a more glamorous job (not retirement, yet), getting a car that's younger than 15 years old, living in one of those houses close to the seminary (you know the ones I'm talking about) and being able to buy the clothing and home furnishings I actually WANT to but instead of just "settling." That is all crap!

So now when I start to fall into that trap, in addition to scripture....I will remember Ruby.

So it's true what they sing, huh? "It's a small world after all." :) What an awesome opportunity! Tell us more about Ruby as you learn.

And I was TOTALLY convicted about my own desire for the American dream. Yuck.

Hey Nikki,
I see you are interested in missions. Are you going on a trip this summer? Where have you been in the past? Take care and God bless.

I also have a great aunt named Ruby. She's a good ol' devout Baptist and her sisters were too, but they've both "gone to be with the Lord," as a good Baptist would say :)

Unfortunately, the whole Baptist thing didn't quite get passed down to the following generations. The kids and grandkids are everything from agnostic, Jewish, New Age-ish, and semi-Christian to Lutheran and Catholic. However, our extended family seems to be pretty much free of any dividing conflict. Grandmothers and great-grandmothers have a way keeping extended families united. Or in the case of "The Godfather," keeping Fredo alive.
