You Say I Only Hear What I Want To

At the frail age of 24, I am considered to be an "older person" by some. Who knew?!

I had the privilege of playing in New Albany with Jaime Barnes last weekend. The audience was spectacular. The highlight of the show occurred in the middle of the set when I covered "Stay" by Lisa Loeb. I started to introduce the song and assumed that everyone knew both Lisa Loeb and the song. It was THE big hit for the small town of Big Spring, TX, so surely these people would be able to sing every line with me. As soon as most people hear me sing "you say," they join in with "I only hear what I want to."

But there was a problem with this theory. The audience was made up of 90% high school students. They stared blankly at me as I spoke about this big hit. I asked that everyone who had heard of Lisa Loeb raise their hands. Not one hand went up. Not a single one! I was dumbfounded. They all looked at me like I was ancient for assuming that they knew who she was (and still is)!

So, maybe I'm getting old. I AM officially in my mid-twenties.

Plus, maybe I'm old for laughing at this, but Mr. T dancing makes me smile. The eighties make me smile. People born in the eighties make me smile. Take a trip down memory lane (if you even know who Mr. T is!) with this Mr. T video!

1981 was a good year. I raise my glass (of sweet tea) to everyone born in the early eighties and everyone who knows who Lisa Loeb is. "You say...I only hear what I want to."

Maybe I am getting old. I find myself comparing the kids I babysit to different tv/movie characters from back in the day. Just today I called one little girl "Punky Brewster" and compared one little boy to "Veruca Salt!"

You know it is all that wisdom that belies your age! :)
It's funny that I too had a trip down memory lane on my last post.

My gosh. I'm floored by the notion that anyone would consider that old. I'm 22 (born on Groundhog's Eve, 1983), and I consider myself to be a kid. As for the 80's: I've fancied many a trip to Japan because the folks there are stuck in the eighties, what with their hairstyles and clothing and whatnot. The computers, though, I guess that's just a wee different. Not quite the Apple II.

Yeah.... I was in college when Lisa Loeb was a big hit (and Reality Bites in general). So you probably don't remember watching Back to the Future (let alone ET) in the theatre or where you were when the Challenger blew up. At least you've probably heard of earlier one-hit wonders like Wang Chung (I sure hope so). Oh well.

Everybody have fun tonight! Everybody wang chung tonight!
I had a keyboard growing up and I would (seriously) play that song on my keyboard all the time!

I do remember "Back to the Future", but "Wayne's World" was more my time. I remember seeing that in the theater twice with the same girl-Alison Woodall. We were in elementary school!

For the record, Sarah Meador, Bobby Gilles, his friend Will (I think) and I all raised our hands at the show. You were the middle-aged one there that night. :)

HA!

just wait until you hit 30 then you'll really feel old.

after that, you start feeling younger. It is a starnge phenomina. I feel about 25, myself. Thats a good age. I'll keep it.

Loved your Dylan post by the way. I'm a huge fan of Mr. Dylan and your boyfriend should get a medal or something for having the sense to take you to a show. I have only seen Dylan once and he made a hockey arena feel like you were in his living room. A truly remarkable performer.

Ahh, Lisa Loeb. Although that isn't her best song on that particular album, kudos to you, Nikki, for playing it. Sorry for the "Miss Lorie Band" remark.

That was a priceless moment the other night....If I do any covers in my show, I plan to pick songs from that era and try to pass them off as my own. Guys like P-diddy do it, right?

"..This is a song I wrote called 'Everything I do, I do it for you'...hope you like it "

I think you and Nikki should cover Islands In The Stream. We'll pretend you wrote it.

As a former resident of beautifully scenic Big Spring, Texas, I concur that Stay was indeed a big hit back in the day. In fact, I downloaded it onto my shiny new iPod last night, which proves it has staying power.
Other memories of Big Spring include an outgoing girl who lived on Lynn Drive with glow in the dark stars plastered all over her room. She should visit my own site and email me sometime...

I have to admit that I never liked Stay...or Lisa for that matter. That is until SOMEONE got me hooked on it. Thanks Nik. And i find myself comparing the kids I work with at church to old tv kids....there's a girl that looks just like Punky Brewster. And it fun having a friend named Willis...we all like to make "What you talking bout" jokes. He is going to seminary in the fall and wants to be a pastor. He said he thought about titling all his sermons "What you talkin bout Willis?" Then he could always just say, "I'll tell you what I'm talking about!!!!" Hehe. I liked it. The eighties were for sure enjoyable. But not as great as the years of the hidesug.

Yep...firmly entrenched in the M20's myself...soon to be staring down the L20's.

I asked Scott O'Neal and Emily Cavanaugh the other night, "so...what were you guys doing in 1997?"

Scott: "Uhhh, I think I was in the 8th grade."

Emily: "I was 12."

When one of your best friends wasn't even in high school when you graduated, and his girlfriend wasn't even a teenager yet, that puts things in perspective. Like, that of a monocle or something.

Yeah, I feel old.

Nikki!...this is Alison from Big Spring...I am taking a computer class right now, and we had to look up ourselves on the net. My name popped up in this site...I clicked on the link and I couldn't believe it was you!
